The town preserves the enclosure of the old town, with a very marked medieval appearance and characteristics. The latter are explosive, and the one that occurred in Santa Margarita opened, when it exploded, a large circular crater, inside which is the hermitage that gives its name to the volcano. Croscat is the youngest volcano in the La Garrotxa volcanic area. It had two eruptions, the first and largest 17,000 years ago, and the second 11,500 years ago. The pavement and furniture in the old town are made of basalt, a rock that is formed when lava cools.
